Finals – the aftermatch

Filed under: Kesäkoodi — Antti Kaijanmäki @ 13:22

Last couple of weeks have been quite a hassle for me and yesterday was my day off.

The finals were held on Friday in Helsinki at Elisa‘s Head office. In case you wonder Elisa is the parent company of Kesäkoodi Gold Sponsor Saunalahti. Finals started at 13:15 – fortunately only 15 minutes late. There were seven finalists and each of us gave a 10-minute presentation. I created my presentation using beamer. Please, remember not to take it too seriously ;) . After the presentations (130 minutes, you do the math) we, the applicants, were thrown out from the conference room to give the board of judges some privacy. When the decisions were ready we were called back and the winners were declared. And yes, I am a winner!

That means that I’m getting paid this summer for working at home with my FOSS project. How sweet is that! Besides the judge representing Elisa pulled me aside before I left and told me if there is something I need that Elisa has in their catalogue I just drop him an email and they will lend me the hardware. Thank you so much Elisa!! Just to show my appreciation I decided to include their logo in this posting, cheers! :D

DISCLAIMER: I will not be employed by Elisa during the summer. They are mere sponsors of Kesäkoodi and have no direct influence on my work. So if other companies want to send me some cool toys, too, just keep ‘em coming 8)

GPRS EC: the legacy

Filed under: Kesäkoodi — Antti Kaijanmäki @ 11:27

Some of you might have heard of GPRS Easy Connect. Well, the project has been closed, R.I.P.

The nice thing about the GPRS EC was that they had a database of service provider specific settings. Long story short, thanks to the GPRS EC maintainer Simon Péter, we now have almost 400 settings as a base for our database!!

NetworkManager, anyone?

Filed under: Kesäkoodi — Antti Kaijanmäki @ 22:45

Sorry for a late update, but my son has been very sick and he has got my undivided attention during the past week. Fortunately he has been better since yesterday.

So what has happened after the last post? First off I got some feedback from the judges about my original application. They were basicly saying that I should greatly consider NetworkManager as a base of my Kesäkoodi. Well quite frankly that was my original idea, but I was worried that targeting NetworkManager directly would lead me to unknown waters and I wanted to play safe.

Well, heck with safe! Shortly after receiving the feedback I desided to go all NetworkManager. I contacted Dan Williams from Red Hat, who is the developer of NM, and asked if he would like to be my Mentor. You can not imagine how excited I was when I got a reply “Sure; I would be happy to“.

After some discussions with Mr Williams I have finally come up with an upgraded project plan. Only thing left to do now is a 10-minute presentation for the finals. It’s time to get ready for some hot ‘n’ steamy beamer love. 8)

PS. Thanks to everyone who helped me to review the plan!
