back on track

I promised to continue the story of my hard drive failure and I’m sorry for the delay. I’ve been just so busy with my studies [how does a BASIC interpreter that generates Solaris SPARC assembly sound to you?].

The original plan was to solder the cable directly on the hard drive. Fortunately I managed to attach the broken socket and cable with some hot glue (thnx Dartteri), and no soldering was necessary. Last weekend I finally copied all the data from the broken hard drive to my new RAID1 installation to safety. I really recommend everyone to have a SystemRescueCd at hand, because it can really safe your life and contains all the tools that standard distro install and live CDs are missing. It also has DBAN if you want to nuke some hot glued hard drives before you try to hit something with them.

So everything went well after all and now I’m extremely thrilled to wait next week and really to kick off my project.
