Service Provider Database

posted on nm-list as preparation for next week:

Hello,

one part of my project is to create and specify a database for service
provider specific settings. I've created an example page in
live.gnome.org. Please, comment if you find something missing or you
disagree. I will begin with the implementation next week.

Br,
Antti

Hello, I’m very intrested in recent changes in NetworkManager. I use PCMCIA card for internet and till now I was forced to use few scripts to start and stop connection to my internet provider. This was allways problematic because off lot things that must be handled manualy (cannot use NetworkManager openvpn, Evolution started disconnected, Pidgin also…) So I was eager to try announced changes in Dan Williams blog (http://blogs.gnome.org/dcbw/2007/12/06/whos-your-daddy-networkmanager-is/, http://blogs.gnome.org/dcbw/2008/02/19/so-much-just-works-it-hurts/) about support for this type of cards. With release of Fedora 9 I quicky upgraded and felt little bit disappointed when I didn’t succeed in setting things up. I created new GPRS connection in connection editor and set auth information but it seems that there is no connection with my card, no new row in nm-applet. Should there be any way to setup serial device for communication(/dev/modem)? Is there any documentation how to set it up?

Sorry for writting here but I didn’t find a way to add comment into Dan’s blog and your work is closely connected to this topic. One thing I don’t undrestand is your project plan whan these things were already released in recent NetworkManager. Or maybe I misunderstood news about NetworkManager

My project is about creating a configuration assistant which will break the setup process of a new mobile broadband connection to small steps.

NetworkManager currently supports CDMA modems as they are easier to use than GSM/GPRS/UMTS modems. Mobile broadband support is very much work in progress. I’m not familiar with Fedoras NM, but I am pretty confident that your problem will go away after the summer.
